Morgan Dollars
1879-O $1 MS66 PCGS. The New Orleans Mint had been out of commission since 1861, making its comeback issue a popular one with collectors. The mandate of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 required massive production of silver dollars -- a task well-suited to the New Orleans equipment. Nearly 2.9 million O-Mint Morgan dollars were struck in 1879.
Examples of this conditionally challenged issue are readily accessible through MS64 but scarce in Gem condition, and unknown any finer than the Premium Gem level. The cheek on the present vibrant and lustrous MS66 is unmarked, while a couple of tiny ticks occur on the neck. Clean, frosty fields are wholly brilliant, and the motifs are especially well-defined. Population: 26 in 66 (3 in 66+), 0 finer (9/17).
