Morgan Dollars
1890-S $1 MS67 PCGS. Blazing frost-white surfaces, a needle-sharp strike, and all-encompassing brilliant-silver cartwheel luster are the immediate impressions of this remarkable Superb Gem 1890-S dollar. The surfaces are exceedingly smooth and dazzling to behold. Marks are limited to a tiny nick on the rim outside of star 8 and a few almost imperceptible high point luster grazes. This is by the finest example we have seen in many years, and one of only three such coins that exist in our 25-year archives.
A sealed Mint bag of Morgan silver dollars contained 1,000 coins, from which perhaps 10 to 20 Gem-quality coins might be obtained. Since the majority of bags went into distribution or storage, few bags were actually cherrypicked for pristine examples. Despite more than 8.2 million pieces struck in 1890 at the San Francisco Mint, most Uncirculated examples that survive are bagmarked and fail to achieve even the MS64 or MS65 levels. This extraordinary MS67 example is one of just nine such coins certified by PCGS and NGC combined (9/17).
