Morgan Dollars
1891-CC $1 Spitting Eagle, VAM-3, Top 100, MS66 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. We have only seen a few Spitting Eagle dollars at the MS66 level, but whether the eagle is spitting or not, any Premium Gem 1891-CC example is rare. The Carson City Mint churned out more than 1.6 million silver dollars for the year, and most suffered the travails of transport and storage or were released into circulation. Lesser grades exist in quantity, while the few high-grade Mint State coins cannot possibly satisfy collector demand.
This is an incredibly smooth and nearly unmarked example, with pinpoint-sharp strike and intense mint luster. The fields approach perfection with a few minuscule grazes but no individually distracting marks. The coin is essentially brilliant, although fleeting glimpses of fawn-gold dart along the rims and from the strands of Liberty's hair. It will be a while before a finer 1891-CC will cross the block in one of our auctions. Population (all varieties): 35 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (9/17).
