Morgan Dollars
1892-CC $1 MS65 Prooflike PCGS. Sharp, frosty design elements provide stark cameo contrast on this Gem Prooflike 1892-CC dollar. The coin is brilliant, and grade-limiting grazes are trivial in nature. Frost-white devices add to the substantial contrast that earns this piece the much-desired Prooflike designation. The mirrored fields are only slightly diminished by sparse field chatter -- an unavoidable result of Mint handling, transport, and government storage.
It was the penultimate year for Carson City coinage operations, and a high-mintage one. The Old West Mint produced 1,352,000 silver dollars -- more than either the Philadelphia or San Francisco mints. Hardly any coins benefited from fresh dies and careful handling. As a result, Prooflike 1892-CC dollars are few and far between in Gem condition, and examples in a higher numeric grade are unknown. Population: 14 in 65 (1 in 65+) Prooflike, 0 finer; 2 in 65 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 0 finer (8/17).
