Proof Gold Dollars
1888 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Reed. During the last six years of gold dollar production, the Philadelphia Mint ramped up the coinage of proof examples to more than 1,000 pieces each year, including 1,079 proofs in 1888. Many of these were sold to jewelers and they were often presented to family members as Christmas presents. This impressive piece has bold field-to-device contrast with sharp design motifs and fully mirrored yellow-gold fields. Census: 13 in 65 Cameo (1 in 65+), 28 finer, including eight Ultra Cameo examples (9/17).
Ex: Byron Reed Collection (Christies/Spink America, 10/1996), lot 425.
