Classic Quarter Eagles
1839-C $2 1/2 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Breen-6149, Winter-3, Variety 24, R.4. This earlier die state shows a full branch and berry on the lower reverse, and is quite scarce as most examples seen were struck from heavily lapped dies. The 1839 is the second of only two Classic quarter eagles struck in the Charlotte mint. An estimated 300-400 examples are believed known today out of a mintage of 18,140 pieces. Only a small handful of survivors are known in Uncirculated. The surfaces are understandably bright from cleaning, and there are numerous small abrasions scattered over each side. Well struck throughout.
