Liberty Quarter Eagles
1852-O $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 2. Mintmark left. A large mintage of 140,000 pieces was issued as the New Orleans Mint concentrated on lower gold denominations in 1851 and 1852, although a substantial number of double eagles were struck in those years as well. Bullion from the California gold fields was abundant and much of it made its way to the Southern facility. O-Mint gold dollars and quarter eagles circulated widely, and few pieces were saved. As a result, the issue is quite scarce in Mint State. This is a flashy Uncirculated example with substantial prooflike character. The strike is uneven at the centers but sharp peripherally. A few delicate lines are scattered about the reflective surfaces. Census: 17 in 61, 11 finer (8/17).
