Proof Liberty Quarter Eagles
1903 $2 1/2 PR67 ★ NGC. Due to the excessive polishing of proof dies in 1903, proof quarter eagles of this date are extremely rare with a Cameo designation from the grading services, and the finest such pieces are only in PR65. This Superb Gem non-Cameo is within the Condition Census of proof 1903 quarter eagles and it is the only Star-designated piece in this grade. The NGC Star appears to have been awarded for this coin's near-Cameo appearance, which features subtle contrast on the obverse and pronounced contrast on the reverse. The glimmering fields are pristine and offer deep, watery appeal. The strike is razor-sharp. This is arguably the finest 1903 quarter eagle known when eye appeal and technical quality are considered in tandem. Census: 5 in 67 (1 in 67+, 1 in 67 ★), 0 finer (9/17).
