Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1879 $3 MS65+ NGC. Almost all Mint State 1879 three dollar gold pieces exhibit light or moderate abrasions, grading no finer than MS64. Gems are scarce, and higher-grade pieces are genuine rarities. Since 1993, we have offered an MS65 coin on only 19 different occasions, suggesting that there is some duplication in the certified population totals. The 1879 is several times scarcer in MS65 than the commonly seen 1878.
This Gem is the first Plus-graded coin in this grade that we have handled. It is impressively well-struck, particularly on the wreath bowknot and the headdress. The yellow-gold surfaces are devoid of major abrasions and show semiprooflike reflectivity in the fields. A few faint grazes left of Liberty's profile are all that deny a full Premium Gem grade. Census: 23 in 65 (3 in 65+, 3 in 65 ★), 3 finer (8/17).
