Early Half Eagles
1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, AU53 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. Blunt 1 in date. A trio of tiny die cracks confirm the die state -- a faint one between I and B of LIBERTY, and two others that bridge the short span from either edge to each nearby wing tip. BD-2 was a remarkably resilient die marriage for an early half eagle, striking approximately half of the entire 1800 mintage. It represents the most-available half eagle of its type, with more than 200 survivors.
The attractive About Uncirculated surfaces display honey-gold color and hints of luster at the margins. Light wear on the central motifs and a few small abrasions are incidental to the excellent overall eye appeal. No early half eagle is readily available, but the 1800 B-2 is a logical selection for type purposes. This one is CAC endorsed.
