Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-2, High R.4, AU55 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, but in the very earliest stages before the cud develops above OF. This is an especially pleasing, satiny example that is very well struck with subtle reddish accents. Clustered on the left side of the eagle's shield are a few short adjustment marks that are only visible with the coin held at a 90 degree rotation under a light. Some circular lathe lines are also visible within the recesses of the shield. The coin is evenly struck with minor weakness where the eagle's wings join the shield edges. Little high-point wear is present, and much luster remains. The 1802 has always been a favorite of early gold collectors because of its distinctive overdate feature and its availability in a wide range of grades. Fewer than 100 BD-2 coins are believed known.
