Early Half Eagles
1803/2 $5 BD-4, R.4, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, with a prominent crack through the base of the date that extends left to star 1. Once thought to me a major rarity, this variety is now considered the second most plentiful of the year, and it is an ideal choice for date or type collectors. Two different overdate obverse dies are known for the 1803/2 half eagles, combined with three reverse dies to create four varieties. The bright lemon-yellow surfaces of this example are fully lustrous with minimal marks. Census for all 1803/2 varieties: 47 in 62, 52 finer (9/17).
