Early Half Eagles
1809/8 $5 BD-1, High R.3, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. Struck from an early die stage, with no die cracks visible and only faint die clashing on the reverse beneath the scroll and above the eagle's outstretched left (facing) wing. The so-called underdigit 8 may actually be a misplaced 9. A single die marriage produced the entire 33,875 piece mintage of 1809 half eagles. This is an attractive About Uncirculated BD-1 example with natural olive-gray accents in protected areas. Glimpses of orange luster peek through the patina. Sharply defined and minimally abraded, the coin shows only a slight flattening of the wire rim at 3 o'clock on the obverse, but no marks of any size.
