Early Half Eagles
1813 $5 BD-1, R.2, MS64 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. While the Capped Head To Left design technically carries on from 1813 through 1834, substantial changes were made along the way. Large Diameter coins were issued through 1829, and reduced diameter coins were struck 1829-1834 with smaller letters, dates, and stars. The earliest Capped Head fives were struck in Bold Relief, but only in 1813-1815.
This first-year-of-issue 1813 example is a splendid near-Gem representative of the Large Diameter, Bold Relief design. Flashy sun-gold surfaces display vibrant and frosted cartwheel mint luster across deeply struck motifs. The stars are needle-sharp. Die clashing shows within the recesses of LIBERTY and among the shield stripes to confirm a late state of the dies, now lapped. In general, the Capped Head type is many times scarcer than half eagles dated 1812 and prior. The 1813 is the only date of the type that is somewhat available in high Uncirculated grades -- in fact, most other dates through 1829 are exceedingly rare regardless of grade -- making it essential for an advanced type set. It will require an extraordinary coin indeed to exceed the eye appeal and technical quality of this outstanding example. Census: 19 in 64, 5 finer (8/17).
