Early Half Eagles
1820 $5 Square Base 2, Large Letters, BD-2, High R.5, MS62 NGC. The tipoff to this die variety, other than the Square Base 2 in the date, is the T in STATES lower than the E adjacent, marking this as the rare (20-25 pieces known) BD-2 pairing. There are four varieties of 1820 half eagle with Square Base 2, all Large Letters, and all are rare to extremely rare. For that matter, the five Curl Base 1820 half eagle die pairings (which come with Small Letters or Large Letters reverses) are rare to extremely rare as well.
John Dannreuther writes: " ... as a date, it appears that 1820-dated coins are fairly available, and they are, but with examples spread among nine varieties, the individual pairings, except BD-2, BD-3, and BD-5, are either very rare or exceedingly rare!" This MS62 example of the BD-2 boasts generous luster and excellent eye appeal over lightly marked surfaces that show some darker copper-orange accents in the fields. The strike is excellent. Census: 8 in 62, 30 finer (8/17).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2013), lot 4516.
