Classic Half Eagles
1836 $5 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-D, R.2. Second Head, Large Date. Star 13 is relatively close to the curl, the date features a Block 8, (UNIT)ED is closely spaced, and the arrowhead is away from the last A in AMERICA. With a mintage of 553,147 coins (second-highest total in the series), the 1836 Classic Head half eagle is a popular target for type purposes. However, most collectors settle for a high-end XF or AU representative. Mint State examples are very scarce and usually found in MS61 or MS62.
This Select offering radiates frosty luster over warm honey-gold surfaces, generating a degree of eye appeal that exceeds expectations for the grade. Each side features a strong impression and minor marks, but the only mentionable imperfections are two thin pinscratches in the right obverse field. Population: 14 in 63, 20 finer (9/17).
