Early Eagles
1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-7, R.3, XF45 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/d. Dentil crumbling around the left obverse border and a die crack from the rim through the upper-left serif of the E in LIBERTY confirm the late die state. BD-7 ranks among the most often seen early eagle varieties. Nevertheless, survivors are very scarce, with John Dannreuther estimating 250 to 350 pieces extant. The obverse die was used to strike an unknown quantity of BD-7 eagles before it was paired with a new reverse to strike the entire run of 2,500 to 3,500 BD-8 ten dollar gold pieces. It was subsequently re-paired with its original reverse. (This coin was produced after BD-8). In all, somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 coins were struck from this die marriage.
Much of Liberty's hair and portrait detail remains distinct, and the stars are well brought-up. Definition is slightly softer on the reverse. Each side features light reddish-gold coloration and myriad tiny field marks, none of which are excessively distracting. This briefly circulated Choice XF ten dollar would fit perfectly into a gold type set.
