Indian Eagles
1908 $10 No Motto MS66 NGC. It took an act of Congress to force President Theodore Roosevelt to make the motto IN GOD WE TRUST part of the nation's newly designed coinage. The legislation was passed in May, 1908 -- by then, a small mintage of ten dollar gold pieces had been struck without the motto at both the Denver and Philadelphia Mints. The Denver total was 210,000 pieces, and the Philadelphia Mint struck a mere 33,500 No Motto eagles.
Only a few Premium Gem No Motto coins exist from that small Philadelphia mintage. This example displays satiny, medium-gold color with virtually no marks to mention. The strike is needle-sharp throughout the central motifs, with only a bit of blending at the bottom two headdress feathers. An essential variety for both series and type collectors, this lustrous and nearly pristine No Motto ten will pique the interest of many gold specialists. Census: 14 in 66, 6 finer (9/17).
