Liberty Double Eagles
1851-O $20 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. A familiar die variety of the most collectible New Orleans double eagle. In 1851, California gold that was not shipped abroad or assayed locally in the San Francisco area was largely shipped by steamboat to the federal mints at New Orleans and Philadelphia. New Orleans received a smaller portion of the newly mined gold than Philadelphia, but double eagle production was still substantial compared to what the branch mint produced in 1854 and later years, when California deposits largely ceased. The 1851-O twenty comes from a mintage of 315,000 pieces and is highly sought-after as one of the few readily collectible O-mint issues in the series. This piece is well-struck and partially lustrous with lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces. Housed in a green label holder with a CAC green sticker.
