Liberty Double Eagles
1854-S $20 AU55 NGC. Several private minting firms sprang into business after gold was discovered in California, and the federal government soon established an assay office in San Francisco that had coinage capabilities. Finally, in 1854, an official branch of the United States Mint began operations in that city. The 1854-S gold dollars, eagles, and double eagles are popular with collectors, while the quarter eagles and half eagles are major rarities in the U.S. gold series. Silver coinage production began the following year with 1855-S quarters and half dollars. This Choice AU double eagle has trivial surface marks on its pleasing light yellow surfaces with faint traces of rose patina, and substantial luster.
