Liberty Double Eagles
1857-O $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1. After three years of lean production at the New Orleans Mint, double eagle coinage increased to 30,000 coins, more than double the production of the previous three years, combined. The 1857-O double eagle coinage was accomplished from a single pair of dies. Pale straw-gold surfaces exhibit trivial marks as expected on this large gold piece that spent some time in commerce. Wispy rose toning is evident on both sides. Winter notes a small raised die rust lump that is located at almost the exact center of the obverse, and might be a centering dot. Census: 23 in 53, 56 finer (9/17).
