Liberty Double Eagles
1861 $20 MS61 NGC. The 1861 used to be the most common Type One double eagle in Mint State, and while its rarity (or lack thereof) has not changed, the rarity of the 1857-S issue has dropped dramatically after several thousand coins were found at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. Today, the 1861 remains a plentiful and popular issue. This is a pleasing and lightly abraded example with rich yellow-gold luster, great color, and only minor abrasions.
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2005), lot 8931.
