Liberty Double Eagles
1861 $20 MS63 PCGS. With a mintage of nearly 3 million coins, the 1861 double eagle had the highest coinage total of all Type One Liberty double eagles, and the third highest mintage of all three types behind the 1904 and 1904-S issues. In fact, there were only six double eagles of any issue from 1850 to 1933 that had higher production quantities. This extraordinary example is conditionally rare in grades better than MS62. The surfaces are brilliant and highly lustrous with trivial marks. The fields are prooflike and present excellent cameo contrast. Population: 35 in 63 (2 in 63+), 17 finer (9/17).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), lot 7081.
