Liberty Double Eagles
1861-O $20 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: Eagle Collection. A single die pair was used to coin double eagles at New Orleans in 1861, but three different governing entities struck the coins: the federal government, the state of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. It is unknown how many coins were struck by each authority, although the total recorded mintage amounted to only 17,741 pieces. Almost all of these coins experienced heavy circulation, as the denomination was not struck again at New Orleans until 1879. As a result, the 1861-O double eagle is both historically significant and scarce in all grades.
This example shows light wear with prooflike mirroring evident in the protected portions of the fields. Even the worn areas are free of major abrasions -- an unusual aspect on New Orleans gold of this period. The lower portions of the date numerals are weak from die polishing.
