Liberty Double Eagles
1877-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. In 1877, the denomination on the reverse of the double eagle was changed from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS. The change may have been for European bankers who were not immediately familiar with the American coinage denominations, or it may have been to avoid confusion with the D mintmark of the Denver Mint. Although gold coins were not struck their until 1906, the initial intention when the Denver Mint was authorized in 1862 was the eventual coinage of gold. This lovely example has light yellow-gold surfaces with satin luster, reflective fields, and minimal marks. NGC has only certified 24 numerically finer examples (9/17).
