Liberty Double Eagles
1879-O $20 AU50 NGC. Variety 1. Remaining dormant since the early days of the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint was readied for reopening in the late 1870s, with coinage commencing in 1879. Morgan dollars were the order of the day (and week, month, and year), and a small emission of 1,500 eagles and 2,325 double eagles were also coined. The 1879-O double eagle was the only New Orleans issue of the Type Three design, and the low survival rate means examples are always in demand since New Orleans type collectors compete with specialists for the limited supply. This pleasing piece has light yellow surfaces with the usual trivial marks. The fields exhibit slight reflectivity. Census: 8 in 50, 40 finer (9/17).
