Bust Half Dollars
1813 50C 50 C Over UNI, O-101, R.2, AU53 NGC. A trace of an inverted UNI is visible at the denomination, which is diagnostic for this variety. There are also prominent clashmarks on both sides, and several outlines of a retrograde LIBERTY are visible beneath the eagle's right (facing) wing, which indicates that the dies clashed on more than one occasion. Mottled deep gray and brown toning covers both sides of this interesting specimen. The stars on the right are sharply struck, while the left stars are weak, as usual. The same pattern of softness is noted on the eagle's wings, but the rest of the details are well-defined. A couple of marks on each side are masked by the dramatic toning.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2008), lot 2058.
