1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-28, BB-118, R.3, XF45 NGC. Bowers Die State I. Advanced die cracks through the date. Bowers' updated Silver Dollar Encyclopedia remarks: "The 1798 BB-118 is of medium rarity among die varieties of the year. I estimate that 275 to 450 exist." Most survivors are seen in VF condition or lower. The devices are strongly detailed, especially the eagle and shield. Steel-gray patina covers most of each side with added russet elements intermixed. Fantastic example for the specialist.
