1840 $1 AU58 NGC. OC-1, R.1. Mottled gunmetal-gray toning is pervasive on both sides of this near-Mint State example of the first year of issue of this design. While popular now, these were largely unheralded on their release, with truly Uncirculated examples being rare. Even the Gardner Collection could go no higher than MS63. This is a striking example of a difficult issue. Census: 44 in 58, 53 finer (9/17).
