Proof Seated Dollars
1861 $1 PR63 NGC. OC-P1, High R.3. A fairly generous mintage of 1,000 proof Seated Liberty dollars was accomplished in 1861, on the brink of the Civil War, but how many were actually distributed remains an open question. Perhaps no more than 350 examples found their way to collectors. Two proof die varieties are known and this coin represents the more available OC-P1 variety, with some unfinished areas around the leaves on the reverse. The design elements are sharply detailed and the lightly marked surfaces are blanketed in shades of lavender-gray and pale gold toning.
