Liberty Half Eagles
1854-C $5 Weak C VF25 NGC. Variety 2. The 1854 Charlotte five exists with either a Bold C mintmark or a Weak C -- this example is clearly the latter, and it is one of the scarcest Charlotte half eagles from the 1850s (along with the 1856-C). Smooth wear exists on the high points, surrounded by lightly marked surfaces, strong rims, and full dentils. Pleasing orange-gold toning shows a bit of old build-up in the recesses. Housed in a previous generation, pre-barcode NGC holder with intact hologram. This coin is the only VF25 certified at either service. Census: 1 in 25, 39 finer (9/17).
