Liberty Half Eagles
1854-C $5 Weak C AU53 PCGS. Variety 2. Weak C Mintmark. Doug Winter estimates the surviving population of 1854-C half eagles at 140 to 170 coins -- not many for this underrated branch mint issue, which ranks seventh among the 24 Charlotte fives in overall rarity. A dappling of golden-gray toning adds eye appeal to this About Uncirculated piece. The star centers and central hair detail is above-average, with only slight weakness at the eagle's neck and head. Marks include light field chatter but no heavy abrasions. Population: 10 in 53, 26 finer (9/17).
