Liberty Half Eagles
1872-S $5 AU55 NGC. The 1872-S five is one of the underappreciated branch mint issues in the challenging Liberty Head half eagle series. The mintage of 36,400 pieces seems generous compared to many of its low-mintage counterparts, but the issue circulated heavily and most pieces were lost to attrition. Perhaps as few as 125 to 150 pieces survive. Vibrant orange-gold color retains most of its luster on this Choice About Uncirculated example. Sharply defined and only lightly abraded, the coin has outstanding eye appeal. Just four Mint State examples are certified by PCGS and NGC combined. Census: 17 in 55, 9 finer (9/17).
