Liberty Double Eagles
1888-S $20 MS63 NGC. The San Francisco Mint produced the lion's share of double eagles in 1888, nearly quadrupling the Philadelphia Mint's production of twenty dollar gold pieces. This Select Uncirculated example is the optimal collector grade, since few finer pieces exist despite the healthy 859,600-piece mintage. Frosted rich-gold surfaces display olive overtones and a crisp strike amplified by strong cartwheel luster. NGC shows just 39 numerically finer pieces in its Census (9/17).
