1849 $5 Norris, Greg, & Norris Five Dollar, Reeded Edge -- Plugged -- NGC Details. AU. K-4, R.4. Period after ALLOY. Kagin lists Period and No Period varieties for examples struck with Plain or Reeded edges. Three engineers from Brooklyn, Thomas H. Norris, Hiram Norris, and Charles Gregg, established the first Gold Rush-era coining operation in Benicia, California in 1849 and struck five dollar gold pieces. This example is strongly defined with signs of light wear, including high-point friction and peppered abrasions. The plug occurs at 12 o'clock on each side at (CALIFO)RN(IA) and WE(IGHT) and is minimally distracting. Listed on page 394 of the 2018 Guide Book.
