California Fractional Gold
1876 25C Indian Octagonal 25 Cents, BG-799B, High R.7 -- Holed -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. BG-799B is one of the true rarities of the Period Two (1858-1882) Octagonal quarters. Discovered by Jay Roe in July, 1980, it is an issue of San Francisco jeweler Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig. When Mohrig was arrested by federal agents, hundreds of his fractional gold pieces were seized and ultimately melted, which could help explain the great rarity of BG-799B. We are aware of just two other PCGS specimens and one NGC coin (all Mint State examples) plus this holed Uncirculated Details coin. It is possible there is some duplication among the other three pieces at the grading services. This example well-struck with sun-gold mirrored fields, holed at 9 o'clock and slightly bent as a result.
