Counterstamps
(1853-54) Syracuse, NY Counterstamp, STONE & BALL, Brunk S-1023, Rulau R-NY-1027G, Good 6 NGC. Incuse Type I counterstamp on three lines, rather awkwardly impressed on the center of a 1787 silver 2 reales piece. The first line, STONE & BALL, is slightly overstamped by the 2-line second punch, SYRACUSE / N.Y. Seymour Stone and Calvin S. Ball sold silverware, jewelry, and repaired clocks. They were prolific issuers of counterstamped coins. The favored incuse punch soon broke at the second L (as shown on this example), with the first L breaking at a later time.
