Coins - Ancient coins - Greece - Gaul
Western Gaul, Redones, c. 100 - 50 BC, Billon Stater. Class 7, D&T 2315, Depeyrot VIII, 152, de la Tour 6792, 6.84 g. To fully appreciate the highly imaginative Celtic art you must be able to see all of the circular composition, but unfortunately the Celts rarely paid as much attention to the striking as they did to working out the images. In the present example however both the exceptional Celtizised head of Apollo on the Obverse and the surreal creature (a devolved biga) on the reverse come to their full right.
