Herat was one of Timur's primary mints, and it was where he established his new silver tanka in 1390. This denomination was adopted at all of his mints over the following decade. Most have a standard obverse type: a central quadrilateral containing the Kalima (la ilah illa Allah, Muhammad rasuluallah), surrounded by the names of the four Rashidun, Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman. and 'Ali (sometimes also with their respective epithets). The reverses of the tankas often took a form of local or regional design. The reverse type of the present issue is composed of five large circles arranged concentrically around a central area that usually contains the mint name and three annulets (representing Timur's personal tamgha). The five circles contain the name, titles, and epithets of both Timur and Mahmud, his nominal Chagatai overlord at the time (the supreme sultan, Mahmud Khan. The great emir, Timur Kurkan"). "
