LYCAONIA. Iconium. Domitian, 81-96. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 17 mm, 4.39 g, 6 h). DOMITI CAIS AVG I (sic!) Laureate head of Domitian to right. Rev. COLONEA ICONIE (sic!) Athena-Minerva, helmeted, standing facing, head to left, holding spear with her right hand and resting her left on shield. RPC III 1611 (1 specimen). Extremely rare, apparently the second and best example known. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.
RPC only cites a poor example in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Our example now completes the reading of the legends - the presence of several spelling errors indicates that the dies were cut by a Greek artist who was struggling with Latin.
