C. Valerius Flaccus. AR Denarius, 82 BC. Obv. Draped bust of Victory right; before, caduceus. Rev. C. VAL. FLA. IMPERAT. Legionary eagle between two standards inscribed H(astati) and P(rincipes); between them, EX S. C. Cr. 365/1c. B. 12. AR. g. 3.95 mm. 18.00 Scarce. Good metal and full weight. A very attractive example, perfectly centred and lightly toned. Good VF.

Minted in Massalia for payment of troops moving against Q. Sertorius in Spain. The first of a series of coinages in Roman numismatic showing a pure military connection. See later the Cn. Nerius issue of 49 BC, with the same reverse type and the close relationship to the legionary denarii of M. Antonius in 32-31 BC.
