ARKADIA, Tegea. Circa 50-25 BC. Æ Hemiobol or Hexachalkon (22mm, 6.39 g, 12h). Head of Aleos right, wearing tainia / Kepheos standing right, holding spear and shield and extending hand to Athena standing left, holding spear and lock of Medusa's hair; between them stands Sterope, holding vessel to receive lock; two monograms in field. BCD Peloponnesos 1749; HGC 5, 1056. Near VF, green patina, light earthen deposits. Interesting type.

Ex BCD Collection (not in previous sales).

Aleos was the mythical founder of Alea and the king of Tegea. Athena presented a lock of Medusa's hair to Aleos so that Tegea, the home of a major sanctuary of Athena, would be rendered unconquerable.
