KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.23 g, 11 h), struck posthumously under Mithridates VI, Byzantion, 1st quarter of the 1st century BC. Head of Mithridates VI with the features of the deified Alexander the Great to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left on low-backed throne, holding Nike in her right hand, a spear in her left, and with her left elbow resting on a shield; below, trident; inner left, monogram of ΣΠΡ; on throne, BY. Callataÿ pl. XXXVIII, L. Müller - . Thompson -. Schlessinger 13 (Hermitage), 1935, 538 (same dies) . Well centered and with a particularly interesting portrait on the obverse . Very fine.

From the Stoecklin collection, Switzerland, acquired prior to 1981 (but probably in the late 1930s or early 1940s).

The head on the obverse of this coin is clearly a disguised portrait of Mithridates VI, assimilated to that of Alexander.
