CILICIA. Tarsos. Mazaios, satrap of Cilicia, 361/0-334 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 10.99 g, 6 h). B'LTRZ Baaltars seated left, head facing, holding eagle, grain ear, grapes, and scepter; to left, T. Rev. MZDI Lion bringing down bull to the left; below SM. SNG France 338-347var. Toned, and with a very sharp reverse. Obverse struck from a worn die, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired prior to 1975.
This coin is most interesting because it was struck using a very worn obverse die paired with a virtually brand new reverse die. Presumably, shortly after this coin was struck the old obverse must have been retired and replaced.
