Anonymous Æ Quadrans. Rome, 135-125 BC. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion skin headdress; three pellets behind / Prow right; three pellets before, ROMA in exergue. Crawford 272/2; McCabe Group L1 (Essays Russo, Witschonke, van Alfen eds. 2013, pp.207-208). 3.57g, 20mm, 6h.

Good Very Fine.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection;
Privately purchased from Ancient Imports, 2016.

This quadrans is of the 135-125 BC period and must be classified with RRC 272 (McCabe Group L1). However due to the incorrect image being used to illustrate RRC 272/2 on plate XXXIX (shown is a quadrans from the earlier series RRC 197 [McCabe Group K3], dating to 157 BC), coins from the later series of which this is a part are often misidentified.
