Ex Schulman 262, 14 May 1975, lot 1217 with ticket;
Illustrated in Banti Aemilia, this coin no. 76/3.

Each of the reverse types of RRC 419/1 was struck with an optional additional legend, as seen on the present example. Despite such a significant legend being evident, coins with and without this legend have the same Crawford variant number as the classification in RRC is based primarily on obverse type. Hence, the 1a,1b,1c and 1d variants depend on whether the bust is diademed or wreathed (in this instance both), and which obverse symbols are present; the reverse classification is of a second order. The same taxonomy dilemma can seen in the classification of RRC 373 (Sulla) and RRC 470 (Pompey Minatia), but oddly not in RRC 340 where a basic division between the initial extremely rare head left varieties, and the remaining head right varieties, would have been helpful to understanding the issue.
