Proof Braided Hair Half Cents
1848 1/2 C Original, B-1, Low R.6, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Missouri Cabinet Collection. Any condition census is subject to the opinion of that person who prepares the compilation. Rick Coleman, in his detailed study of proof half cents, records this piece first in his roster, ahead of all others. Walter Breen and Jon Hansen, in their condition census published in Walter Breen's Half Cent Encyclopedia, list this piece fifth in their roster, but all examples carry the same "Proof" grade. This Red and Brown Gem is well within the Condition Census, and likely the second or third finest known example. Walter Breen recorded 13 known proofs, including two that he attributed as "Restrike Series VII." Most others classify those pieces alongside Original proofs, and today we believe that just over two dozen of these 1848 Original proof half cents exist.
Considerable mint red remains on the reflective surfaces with splashes of blue toning on the reverse. Identifying spots are noted left of the 1, right of the lower hair bun, and at the top of the head below and right of star 7. This piece exhibits a full strike as expected, with mild field reflectivity. Our EAC grade PR63.
