1883 5C No Cents PR67+ PCGS. CAC. Despite producing numerous transitional patterns during the previous two years, the lack of the word CENTS on the reverse went unnoticed, or was considered unimportant. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous con men took advantage of the situation and gold plated some of these pieces to pass them off as half eagles. This oversight was corrected later in the year. This Plus-graded Superb Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements and the fields are deeply reflective. The impeccably preserved surfaces show highlights of greenish-gold and lavender toning.
