Buffalo Nickels
1920-S 5C MS65 PCGS. A certain combination of strike sharpness and surface quality is required for a Buffalo nickel to warrant an MS65 grade, a combination seldom seen on the 1920-S. This issue is a rarity in Gem condition and extremely rare any finer. Here is a pastel-toned example with delicate lavender, ice-blue, and champagne hues. The centers are not quite full but do exhibit above-average definition. Under a loupe, the remarkable surface quality is immediately apparent. Of the Gem 1920-S nickels that we have handled over the years, only a small fraction have been PCGS-certified. Moreover, this is among the most attractive examples we have seen to date. Population: 26 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (10/17).
