Mercury Dimes
1927-D 10C MS66 Full Bands PCGS. The 1927-D Mercury dime claims a modest mintage of 4.8 million pieces and the issue is quite difficult to locate in higher Mint State grades, with the Full Bands designation. The U.S. Mint tried to extend die life in the 1920s, by spacing the dies farther apart than in earlier years. This reduced impact-stress during striking, but was not optimum for bringing up design detail. The Mint also continued to use the dies long after they began to show wear and deterioration, resulting in blending of the bands on the fasces and flattening of the letters in the peripheral legends.
The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with a better-than-average strike that shows fully split and rounded bands on the fasces. The central design elements are sharply detailed, but even this coin shows some slight flattening of the letters in the legends near the border. The well-preserved surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, with a few subtle hints of greenish-gold toning. Population: 16 in 66 (1 in 66+) Full Bands, 0 finer (10/17).
